3 amazing woodworking tricks

A shadow box made from scroll saws is a great way to display photographs or artwork. A small shadow box can add a certain sense of wonder. One simple scene can be created from seven layers 1/4" Baltic Birch plywood. It measures approximately 4 inches square and 1.75 inch thick. You can add small details to give the piece an extra dimension and intrigue. Increasing the size of a shadow box would require more detail and make it more complex. This scene is the inside of a shadow box.

How To

How to make wood joints

This tutorial will demonstrate how to join two pieces together of wood. We will use the "pockethole joint," which means that we drill holes in the wooden pieces and then glue them together. This method is great if your wood's straight and smooth. Try dowel joinery instead if your wood doesn't look straight. Here are the steps

  1. Drill Pocket Hole Joints. Start by measuring and marking the spot where the pocket hole joint will be placed. Next, drill 3/4 inch holes in each end of each piece using a handheld drilling machine or jigsaw.
  2. Sand Smooth. Sanding the edges of the wood will help to prevent the joint from splitting later.
  3. Glue both sides together. Apply glue to both ends of the wood. Let the wood sit for 5 minutes, then clamp it together.
  4. Fix the Pieces together. After the glue has dried thoroughly, secure the pieces so that they are flush.
  5. Trim Joinery. After the glue dries completely, trim off any excess wood around the joint.

Be sure to leave enough space between each piece so that they can be turned inside-out.
