FAQ

What is the main difference between plywood or particle board?

Plywood is made up of layers of wood pressed together under pressure. Plywood is available in a variety of thicknesses. It is often used to make cabinets or flooring. Particle board is made of sawdust and resin that has been compressed into large blocks. It is used primarily for home improvements. Both types of boards can be easily cut and are durable.

What is the difference between a hobbyist woodworker and a professional woodworker.

Hobbyists love making things from wood while professionals are more concerned with the quality of their work. Hobbyists tend to take pride and share their creations with family and friends. Professionals spend hours researching design ideas before starting to work on a project. Professionals will be meticulous about all aspects of their work, from selecting the right materials to finishing it.

Can this be a way to make money?

Yes! In fact, many woodworkers already do. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' (BLS), in May 2012 the median annual wage of woodworkers was $34,000 This is significantly higher than the national average, which is $31,000 per year.

Where can I start woodworking?

The best way to learn how to build furniture is by building furniture. While you will need tools and make mistakes, you will eventually master the art of building furniture.

Begin by choosing the project that you want to finish. It can be something as simple and small as a box, or large-scale as an entertainment center. Once you've settled on a project find a local skilled woodworker. Ask your local woodworker to help you determine the right tools for you and where they are located. Ask if you can find someone who does this kind work.

How can a beginning woodworker make a living?

Many people are looking to create their own furniture and start an internet business. If you are just starting to build furniture, there are many other ways to make money than selling on Etsy. You could sell at craft fairs or local events. For those who want to build their own furniture, you might offer workshops. Perhaps you have some experience as a carpenter/builder and would like to offer your services, such as remodeling homes and creating custom pieces.

How To

How do you accurately measure wood?

We use many methods to measure wood. We use a digital ruler (a tool to measure distances), laser level (used for leveling your work surface), and bubble level (used for levelling your work surface).

A digital caliper has two jaws that open and close. One jaw holds the object being measured and the other measures the distance between them. The digital caliper is great for measuring small distances like thicknesses of wood.

Laser levels feature an infrared-light beam that projects lines across the floor. A red dot is created by the laser. By looking down the line, you can see whether the surface is even or not. For large surfaces, laser levels are the best way to check their accuracy.

Bubble levels look similar to a compass. The device's center bubble is visible. As long as the bubble is centered, the device will tell you whether the surface is level or not. For checking the accuracy of small areas, bubble levels are useful.
